One Greater Manchester team fields an amateur veterans squad with nine former top-flight footballers in their active lineup.

Stephen Ireland started turning out for the team during preseason this summer through good friend and current Wythenshawe teammate Blake Norton, and the former Irish player then invited other former professionals, who all compete in a midweek small-sided match, to join in.

Ex- Senegal forward Niasse, who netted 12 scores in 65 top-flight games for Everton and even now goes to their home games, also had his debut versus Collegiate OB - who are based in Liverpool and wear an Blue training kit as their uniform.

"A friend Stephen said 'join and have a game, it's a laugh'," said Niasse.

"Then he informed me we were facing a team from Liverpool and the surprise I had when I noticed them wearing Blue kits - I say this is wrong for me!

So great is the squad depth at the club, Niasse made his first game at full-back.

"That's a bit unusual but then, I enjoy sprinting and just go inside - I'm not staying back that much," he added.

"I tell my centre-back 'I'm not staying' and that I'm just going to keep attacking.

"The running is what I'm after. It's enjoyable."

In addition to Cisse's 6 scores on debut, Ireland has scored 8 in 3 appearances for Wythenshawe, while George Boyd scored 5 on his debut appearance and Lescott, a defender by trade, notched a hat-trick in one game as a striker.

Wythenshawe are leading of the Premier Division with three wins from three and a GD of plus nineteen.

One opponent, 38, who plays on the wing for the opposition, faced former Latics full-back Figueroa on Sunday - and had to explain his young boy who Heskey was.
