Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
