Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a major awards ceremony nears, there’s always a clamor for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial above others. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications successfully include many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
