The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after the defender's first goal, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to ensure the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's team into third place in the Premier League, five points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in role at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair handled excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered threatening crosses into the Spurs penalty area.

The Toffees: The team head to Sunderland in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: The London club travel to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
